$11M VA grants to combat veteran homelessness in Alabama

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is investing more than $11 million in Alabama to support veterans struggling with homelessness and access to basic resources.

Funding to Three Key Organizations

Three organizations will benefit from the 2026 funding: United Way of Central Alabama, Volunteers of America Southeast, and Hope for All Gulf Coast. Together, these groups work to connect veterans and their families with housing, health care, financial planning, child care, legal assistance, and transportation.

Priority Veteran Receives Majority of Grant

The largest share of the grant—about $7.9 million, or 70% of the total—will go to United Way’s Priority Veteran program. Since its launch, Priority Veteran has helped more than 4,000 veterans secure stable housing and contributed to a 40% reduction in veteran homelessness during its first decade.

Expanding Reach to More Veterans

Candace O’Neil of United Way said the program continues to encourage veterans to reach out and check their eligibility. “Even if they aren’t eligible, we’ll still connect them with resources in their area,” she explained. “Family members can also call on behalf of a veteran.”

Priority Veteran is still actively enrolling clients. Veterans or family members seeking support can call 1-866-460-3827 for assistance. The VA’s investment will allow the program, and others across Alabama, to expand their reach and ensure that more veterans have access to safe housing and critical resources.
