After nearly nine decades in business, a beloved Homewood bakery will soon close its doors.
Savage’s Bakery & Deli to close after 87 years
Savage’s Bakery & Deli will close permanently on Saturday, Feb. 14. The longtime downtown Homewood staple has served customers since 1939.
Owner Van Scott Jr., who has operated the bakery since 1978, announced his retirement in a note posted on the door. As a result, the family-owned business will end its 87-year run on Valentine’s Day.
A Birmingham original since 1939
William Savage founded the bakery in 1939 at Highland Plaza in Birmingham’s Southside. Developers later demolished the aging shopping center in 2023.
During the 1950s, the bakery relocated to 2916 18th Street South in Homewood. Over time, it became a fixture along the city’s main downtown corridor. Generations of families have stopped in for cakes, cookies, and fresh-baked rolls.
Known for Meltaways and smiley face cookies
Savage’s built its reputation on original recipes and classic treats. Customers regularly lined up for Meltaways, iced smiley face cookies, gingerbread men, Butterflake rolls, and custom cakes.
Because of its longevity and loyal following, the bakery earned a reputation as a true Birmingham institution. Now, as the doors prepare to close, longtime customers are reflecting on decades of sweet memories.
