Birmingham City Council funds 1,200 UAB football tickets

The Birmingham City Council has allocated $200,000 to purchase 1,200 tickets for the remaining home games at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The tickets will be distributed to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority often given to schools, youth football leagues, neighborhood groups, and community organizations.

Funding Source and Purpose

The money comes from the city’s Sporting and Entertainment Recruiting Fund, which is supported by Birmingham’s $3 lodging tax. The fund is designated for sports and entertainment recruitment and retention and covers events such as the Magic City Classic, the Birmingham Bowl, this year’s World Police and Fire Games, and the upcoming 2028 Senior Games.

Supporting UAB and Local Sports

Councilman Darrell O’Quinn emphasized that the funding supports both UAB athletics and broader community engagement. The investment is intended to grow the university’s fanbase and enhance Birmingham’s sports and entertainment offerings.

Economic and Community Impact

UAB is the largest employer in Alabama and a key stakeholder in Birmingham’s economy. Council officials say this funding reflects a collaborative effort between the city, the university, and other partners to support sports programs while boosting local engagement and economic activity.
