Beloved Birmingham rock climbing gym BhamBoulders will close its doors at the end of the year after nine years in operation.
Why BhamBoulders is closing
The Homewood gym announced it will close on Dec. 31 after the building housing the facility was sold. The owners shared the news in an Instagram post, explaining that the decision came after months of difficult conversations and evaluations.
They explored several options to keep the gym open. For example, they considered purchasing the property or selling the building and business together. However, those options were not financially viable, which ultimately led to the closure decision.
A community-built gym
BhamBoulders, also known as B2, grew out of First Avenue Rocks, a small, homemade climbing gym founded in 2009 during an economic downturn. From the beginning, the gym focused on more than climbing alone. Instead, it aimed to build a welcoming space where beginners and experienced climbers could train, connect and grow together.
Over time, the gym expanded its vision. As a result, B2 became a larger training facility near Red Mountain Park, featuring custom-built walls and thousands of pounds of steel. Most importantly, the gym remained deeply rooted in community support, volunteer labor and shared passion.
Owners reflect on the impact
Although the closure marks the end of an era, the owners emphasized gratitude and pride in what the gym became. They said BhamBoulders was never just a business. Instead, it was shaped by the people who showed up every day and believed in the space.
While the gym will soon close, its legacy lives on through the climbers it introduced to the sport and the community it helped build across Birmingham.
