Drivers along U.S. Highway 280 are experiencing ongoing delays as a major construction project reshapes one of Birmingham’s busiest corridors.
Why traffic is backing up
Construction crews are adding an extra lane and repaving the roadway between Hollywood Boulevard in Homewood and Interstate 459. While the improvements are intended to ease congestion long-term, the active work zones have slowed traffic significantly, especially during rush hours. Many drivers are choosing alternate routes to avoid delays and potential vehicle wear caused by uneven pavement.
Impact on daily commutes
The project has noticeably increased commute times for residents traveling between Birmingham neighborhoods and nearby suburbs. Trips that once took under 30 minutes now often take much longer, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. The congestion has created challenges for commuters, delivery drivers, and anyone relying on Highway 280 as a primary route.
What drivers can expect next
The Alabama Department of Transportation is managing the project and continues resurfacing lanes to improve road conditions. Weather conditions may affect progress, but portions of the work could be completed within weeks. Additional disruptions are expected when crews begin replacing the Pump House Road bridge, a phase that will require further lane closures. The lane expansion is expected to wrap up by October, with the entire project scheduled for completion in early 2027.
