Birmingham Festival Theatre, a long-standing part of the city’s arts scene, is calling on the community for support after discovering a break-in following a recent performance.
Theft Comes at a Difficult Time
Founded in 1972 and currently in its 52nd season, Birmingham Festival Theatre (BFT) operates out of a historic space above Golden Temple in Five Points South. Last weekend, BFT board members found that the theater had been burglarized after a show. According to a post shared on the organization’s social media, cash was stolen, and the incident happened when the venue was unoccupied.
The post also noted that the theater had already been facing serious financial challenges. The theft, they said, targeted a vulnerable time when the organization was already evaluating whether it could continue operations long term.
Community Asked to Step In
BFT is now encouraging the public to show support through several avenues. Attending a performance is one of the most immediate ways to help.
The organization also welcomes direct donations and offers a Sustaining Member program, which allows supporters to contribute monthly and receive benefits such as ticket discounts and access to special events.
Courtyard Festival Planned for August 1
In addition to performances and donations, BFT will host a Courtyard Festival on Friday, August 1, from 8 p.m. to midnight. The event will feature live music, refreshments, and a chance to support local arts in a social setting. Proceeds from the event will help the theater recover from the financial loss caused by the burglary.
