Birmingham seeks developers for hotel at former cathedral site

The City of Birmingham is inviting development teams to transform an abandoned cathedral site near Protective Stadium and Top Golf into a new hotel.

Request for Proposals

Birmingham released a request for proposals (RFP) on September 17, seeking experienced developers to manage the design, financing, construction, and operation of a hospitality-focused project. The city is looking for a branded mid-to-upscale hotel with at least 100 rooms, potentially combined with mixed-use elements that complement the Uptown entertainment district. Site visits for prospective developers are scheduled, and proposals are due by October 31 at 4 p.m.

City Vision

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin emphasized the project’s role in Birmingham’s growth, stating the city seeks partners who can help build “a welcoming, thriving city for residents and visitors alike.” Coreata’ R. Houser, interim director of the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, added that the development should reflect Birmingham’s character, support the local economy, and provide a long-term community asset.

Strategic Location

The site includes two city-owned parcels at 1129 Carraway Boulevard and 2615 12th Avenue North. Its profile has grown since the 2021 opening of Protective Stadium and the recent launch of the Coca-Cola Amphitheater, placing the property in the heart of Birmingham’s entertainment and sports corridor.

Birmingham officials hope the hotel will revitalize the long-neglected site while contributing to the city’s broader downtown development goals.
