A once-troubled motel on Crestwood Boulevard is undergoing a major transformation. The former USA Economy Lodge, previously known for its history of criminal activity, is being redeveloped into affordable housing with a special focus on helping veterans and others in need.
Developer Richard Rubin, managing partner of the project, said his goal is to provide a fresh start for people trying to rebuild their lives. “We especially want to support veterans who may be struggling to get back on their feet,” he said.
A Strategic Location With a Mission
The location was chosen carefully. The property sits just down the road from a state-of-the-art VA medical facility, which Rubin says makes it ideal for serving former service members.
“As an immigrant, I’m deeply aware of the sacrifices our military personnel have made,” Rubin said. “It’s not lost on us that many veterans struggle with housing and routine after their service.”
First Phase to Include 60 Units
The project will open with 60 units in its first phase. Rubin hopes to eventually expand the development to include more than 200 units. He said the team is working toward a mid-August opening.
“We believe there will be strong demand,” Rubin added. “There’s a real need for this type of housing.”
Art, Renewal, and Community Impact
Beyond shelter, the project aims to improve the area’s appearance. A local artist is painting murals on-site, and construction crews are working steadily to complete the renovation over the coming months.
