Free Birmingham Library programs this month to help you de-stress, boost health

This August, Birmingham residents can enjoy free health and wellness programs at several Birmingham Public Library (BPL) branches.

Supporting Mental and Physical Health

BPL offers activities that help community members lower stress, build healthy habits, and make informed health choices. These events show that the library is more than a place for books—it is a hub for learning, connection, and personal growth.

Programs for All Interests

The August schedule includes both in-person and virtual events. Residents can explore emergency safety tools, learn to navigate trusted medical websites, or take part in wellness screenings. Whether someone wants to gain new health knowledge or connect with local experts, there is something for every interest.

August Event Lineup

On Wednesday, August 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the library will present a virtual workshop called “Exploring MedlinePlus.” Attendees will learn how to use the National Library of Medicine’s trusted health website, which is available in both English and Spanish. Megan Bell, Consumer Health and Community Engagement Librarian at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), will lead the session. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. For more information, call (205) 226-3640.

On Saturday, August 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the North Birmingham Regional Library will team up with UAB Mobile Wellness. Together, they will offer free health screenings, wellness information, and resources designed for adults and seniors. The event will take place at 2501 31st Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35207. Call (205) 226-4025 for more details.

BPL understands that maintaining health and managing stress can be difficult. That is why the library continues to create welcoming spaces where residents can relax, learn, and connect. All events are free and open to the public. To see the full list of upcoming programs, visit cobpl.org/calendar.
