Stone Building Co., led by brothers Justin and Brett Drummond, recently completed one of Birmingham’s most ambitious projects: the $46 million Coca-Cola Amphitheater. The 9,300-seat venue opened this summer at 2350 15th Avenue North, bringing a new entertainment hub to the city.
Building a Landmark on a Tight Timeline
The project required 650 tons of steel, 8,500 cubic yards of concrete, and the efforts of more than 700 workers. With just 11 months to finish the job, the Stone team faced pressure from both design complexity and scheduling demands. Despite these challenges, the company turned the amphitheater over to manager Live Nation one day ahead of schedule.
Crafting a Venue for the Community
Stone Building Co., which Justin and Brett acquired in 2016, has a long history of taking on complex projects. Past work includes the West Homewood Athletic Complex, UAB student housing, and the scoreboard installation at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium. Still, Justin noted that the amphitheater presented unique challenges: an outdoor venue sensitive to weather delays, large-scale concrete pours on sloped ground, and the logistical hurdles of working under the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport flight path while using a 160-foot crane.
The completed complex features eight buildings, including the main stage, an artist village, VIP club, concessions, restrooms, bars, and office space. Two former Carraway Hospital parking decks were also renovated to support event traffic. Live Nation, which oversees the venue, has booked nearly 30 shows for its inaugural season, featuring artists such as Phish, James Taylor, Jason Aldean, and T-Pain. The amphitheater also partners with Birmingham-based nonprofit KultureCity to provide sensory-inclusive amenities.
Looking Ahead
Although not the largest project in company history, Justin and Brett say the amphitheater stands out as one of their most rewarding. Next, Stone Building Co. is preparing to contribute to Tuscaloosa’s Saban Center, a new STEM and arts campus scheduled to open in 2027.
