Downtown Birmingham is getting a new addition to its culinary lineup. Johin’na, an upscale Japanese-Southern fusion restaurant, officially opens Friday, August 1 at 2002 2nd Ave. N.
A Unique Concept with Southern Flair
Johin’na offers a refined approach to dining. While rooted in Japanese culinary technique, the restaurant incorporates the welcoming spirit of the South. The result is an experience where precision meets warmth, from the sushi menu to the personalized service. Guests can expect beautifully plated dishes, chef-led tastings, and a strong focus on detail throughout.
Three Dining Spaces with Distinct Vibes
The restaurant includes three main dining rooms: the Sakura Room, the Pagoda Room, and the Kurama Room. Each space features large-scale murals inspired by traditional Japanese art. In the Sakura Room—the largest of the three—a glowing cherry blossom tree sits at the center. Surrounding it is a circular marble bar, velvet banquettes, and high-top tables.
The Pagoda Room faces 2nd Avenue and includes a sushi bar, neon accents, and a mural of a twilight landscape. Meanwhile, the Kurama Room is designed for a more intimate feel and is ideal for small groups or private dinners.
Details That Make a Statement
From the moment guests step into the lobby, the atmosphere is intentionally curated. A rainbow of paper parasols hangs from the ceiling. The walls in the restrooms shimmer with mirrored tiles. Light-up signage, aquariums, and subtle design touches make each corner of Johin’na visually engaging.
Ready to Try It?
The restaurant is located inside The Frank building. Reservations for opening day are already full, but more times will be available soon. Whether you’re looking for a sushi night out or a new brunch spot, Johin’na offers something fresh for Birmingham diners.
