Art lovers in Alabama will soon have the chance to experience a major international exhibition as the Birmingham Museum of Art hosts Monet to Matisse: French Moderns, 1850–1950.
A rare collection of iconic artists
The exhibition features more than 100 works by some of the most celebrated figures in art history, including Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Gustave Courbet, and Camille Pissarro. The show spans a century of French modern art, highlighting the evolution of painting, sculpture, and works on paper between 1850 and 1950.
More than half of the pieces are on loan from the Brooklyn Museum, with additional works drawn from the Birmingham Museum of Art’s own collection, significantly expanding the size of the traveling exhibition for its Alabama stop.
What visitors can expect
Rather than an immersive, multimedia experience, the exhibition focuses on traditional gallery presentation. Visitors will explore thoughtfully curated sections dedicated to landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and the human figure, offering an in-depth look at the artistic movements that shaped modern art.
The exhibition appeals both to seasoned art enthusiasts and casual visitors interested in seeing recognizable masterworks up close, making it one of the museum’s most anticipated shows in recent years.
