New owner reveals big plans for Alabama’s largest home in Birmingham

Sergei Kaminskiy never visited Alabama before touring Chateau Montagel, the largest home in the state, but the experience quickly changed his expectations.

A first impression that changed everything

Kaminskiy, a San Diego-based entrepreneur and founder of the Kaminskiy Group, discovered the 68,000-square-foot Shoal Creek estate through an Instagram post. Although he arrived with few expectations, the drive into the neighborhood and the sight of the home left a lasting impression. Soon after, he purchased the property for about $4.8 million.

A massive estate with big challenges

Built in 1997 by MedPartners founder Larry House, the Versailles-style mansion spans 27 acres and includes 15 bedrooms, 22 bathrooms, multiple fireplaces and extensive luxury finishes. However, the home sat largely abandoned for seven years. As a result, plumbing damage, roof leaks and other issues now require major repairs. Even so, Kaminskiy said his background in high-end renovations prepared him for the work ahead.

Big renovation plans and a long-term vision

Kaminskiy plans a renovation that could take up to three years. First, he wants to add a biohacking floor with fitness and recovery features, including a gym, therapy rooms and wellness technology. Meanwhile, a design team will map out the full restoration, which he may document through social media. Although he plans to host VIP events, Kaminskiy intends to keep Chateau Montagel as his private residence and a place to inspire entrepreneurs. Ultimately, he said the project reflects both his journey and his growing appreciation for Alabama, calling the experience “a fun ride” with the potential to impact many people.
