No more climbing 159 stairs for Vulcan Park visitors

Visitors heading to Birmingham’s most famous landmark can once again choose between stairs or an elevator to reach the top of the Vulcan statue’s observation tower. After being out of service for most of 2025, the elevator was repaired late last year and is now fully operational.

Vulcan Park elevator back in service for visitors

During the elevator outage, the only way to reach the observation deck was by climbing 159 stairs inside the tower. Despite the challenge, tourists continued to visit daily, often opting to make the climb for the reward of panoramic city views. With the elevator back online, many visitors are now choosing the easier ride to the top.

A long history of repairs and restoration

Access to the observation tower has faced several interruptions in recent years. From June 2023 through March 2024, visitors were unable to use either the stairs or the elevator while the tower underwent weatherizing and repairs. After reopening, the elevator later broke down again, remaining out of service through much of 2025.

Ongoing maintenance is required for the 122-year-old cast-iron statue due to constant exposure to the elements. Vulcan, depicting the Roman god of fire and forge, was created for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis as a tribute to Birmingham’s iron and steel industry. Since returning to the city, the statue has undergone multiple restoration efforts to preserve its structure and appearance.

What visitors should know before going

Vulcan Park briefly closed due to weather on Sunday, Jan. 25, and reopened Monday, Jan. 26, at noon. Ticket prices increased last year, with basic adult admission now set at $8, seniors at $6, and children ages 5–12 at $4. Admission includes access to the observation tower—by stairs or elevator—and entry to the Vulcan Museum.

Normal park hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
