Southern Research teams up with UK firm on global respiratory disease & cancer research

Southern Research in Birmingham is expanding its global reach through a new international collaboration aimed at tackling some of today’s most pressing health challenges.

A new global research partnership

Southern Research has entered into a three-year partnership with London-based Pathogenus Consulting. The agreement, which can be renewed, allows the two organizations to collaborate on global research initiatives and support international biotech companies developing new treatments.

Focus on respiratory diseases and emerging viruses

The collaboration will concentrate on respiratory illnesses such as influenza, RSV and COVID-19, along with other viral diseases including Dengue fever. Pathogenus’ European network will pair with Southern Research’s scientific infrastructure, including its Biosafety Level 2 and 3 laboratories at the Birmingham headquarters.

Expanding impact beyond Birmingham

In addition to infectious diseases, the partnership will also support research in areas like cancer, a longtime focus for Southern Research. Leaders from both organizations said the collaboration strengthens early-phase testing, business development and global market access, positioning Birmingham-based research to make an even broader international impact.
