Spirit Airlines will end service at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport on October 3, airport officials confirmed this week.
Service Ending After Bankruptcy Filing
The decision follows Spirit Airlines’ second bankruptcy filing in August. The carrier had previously emerged from Chapter 11 reorganization earlier this year, but executives said additional restructuring was needed to address ongoing financial challenges.
Spirit’s Time in Birmingham
Spirit first arrived in Birmingham in October 2024 with nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale. Over time, service expanded to include routes to Newark, New Jersey, and Detroit, Michigan.
Impact on Passengers
Customers with flights booked after the October 3 end date will be contacted by email with refund information, according to the airline. Refunds and additional support will also be available through the “Contact Us” section of Spirit’s website.
