Two Birmingham Winn-Dixie grocery stores will close early next year after the company could not find buyers. The closures affect locations at 4476 Montevallo Road and 500 Inverness Corners.
Winn-Dixie Shifts Focus to Florida
Parent company Southeastern Grocers announced it is rebranding as The Winn-Dixie Co. and concentrating on Florida and select Georgia markets. The company said, “We are finalizing multiple store divestitures as part of our strategic focus on Florida and select Georgia markets. Both stores are expected to close early next year.”
Impact on Employees and Alabama Locations
Southeastern emphasized it will support its associates during the transition with care and respect. The closures are part of a larger exit from several states, including Alabama. Earlier this year, Winn-Dixie closed four locations across three Alabama cities. Three stores transitioned to Food City in Fultondale, Trussville, and Jasper, while Prattville will become a Piggly Wiggly.
Wider Reorganization and Future Plans
The company will continue operating around 130 grocery stores and 140 liquor stores in Florida and Georgia. Additionally, Aldi is converting 220 former Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s stores, including Alabama locations, into its stores. This reflects Southeastern’s ongoing strategy to focus on core markets.
