UAB opens Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences building

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has officially opened the Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building, a major addition to its medical and research campus.

A new era for precision medicine and innovation

Located between 19th and 20th Streets South, the 175,000-square-foot facility features a double-helix architectural design and serves as a central hub connecting UAB’s research, clinical, and educational missions. It brings together experts from the Heersink School of Medicine, the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute, and multiple interdisciplinary centers focused on genomics, informatics, and translational science.

UAB President Ray Watts called the building “a launchpad for discovery,” emphasizing its role in advancing data-driven medicine, artificial intelligence, and personalized care. Research will focus on chronic and genetic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Powered by public and private investment

The $50 million project represents the largest state investment in a university facility in Alabama’s history, supported by the Public School and College Authority, Jefferson County, the City of Birmingham, the Altec/Styslinger Foundation, and Dr. Marnix and Mary Heersink. Governor Kay Ivey said the project “will attract top-tier talent, generate high-paying jobs and stimulate economic growth.”

UAB expects more than 90 researchers to move into the building initially, with room to expand by 30 more teams.

Collaboration driving regional growth

The facility includes modern laboratories, computational research areas, and collaborative workspaces designed to accelerate biomedical discoveries and commercialization. It also features the new Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation Conference Center and Kracke Plaza, a green space honoring UAB’s first medical dean.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the project “strengthens the city’s reputation as a destination for innovation and opportunity,” reinforcing UAB’s role as an anchor of growth and research leadership in Alabama.
