The University of Alabama at Birmingham has kicked off the fall semester with the largest freshman class in its history, according to preliminary figures released by the university.
25% Jump in First-Year Enrollment
Roughly 2,500 first-year students began classes last month, marking a 25% increase over 2024. UAB President Ray L. Watts credited the surge to the university’s strong academics and “transformative opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.” Final enrollment totals will be confirmed in October.
Growth Outpaces Statewide Trends
UAB’s expansion continues a decade-long rise. From 2015 to 2024, the university’s total enrollment climbed 14%, outpacing the 11% growth across Alabama’s public colleges during the same period. Only Alabama State, Athens State, and the University of South Alabama reported declines in that timeframe.
Strong Alabama Roots
Historically, most UAB students hail from within the state, underscoring the university’s role as a key driver of higher education and workforce development for Alabama as it attracts a record number of newcomers to its Birmingham campus.
