UAB’s printing capability gets a major upgrade

UAB Printing & Mailing Services recently installed a new 5-color RMGT 970 press featuring LED-UV curing technology, boosting both efficiency and print quality.

The department operates out of a 19,000-square-foot facility in Birmingham. It serves the campus by producing admissions packets, brochures, postcards, flyers, and newsletters for faculty, students, departments, and organizations. As Director Paula Blackwell put it, “It’s a one-stop shop.” The team prioritizes keeping production in-house to maintain control over quality and turnaround time.

UAB Doubles Down on Offset Printing

While many print operations have shifted toward digital, UAB continues to invest in offset printing. This commitment sets them apart. “We run offset all day, every day, Monday through Friday,” said Blackwell. Although the department has a digital unit, offset printing still accounts for about half of total output.

Recognizing that their 30-year-old press was nearing the end of its life, the team selected the RMGT 970 for its advanced capabilities and long-term savings. As a result, UAB now has the tools to maintain its offset leadership well into the future.

Faster Turnaround and Less Waste

One of the key upgrades is the LED curing system, which dries each sheet instantly. Consequently, jobs move straight to finishing—cutting, folding, and stitching—without delay. “Now we print in the morning, and the piece is in the mailroom that afternoon,” said Production Supervisor Greg Curtis.

Moreover, the LED technology cuts energy use and eliminates the need for spray powder. Ink waste has dropped significantly as well. “Before, we had to toss dried-out ink almost every morning,” said Curtis. “Now, ink only cures under the LED lamp, so every drop we buy gets used.”

Expanded Capabilities and Easier Operation

Previously, the department outsourced projects requiring soft-touch coatings. With the RMGT 970’s inline coater and support for both aqueous and LED-curable varnishes, those projects now stay in-house. This improvement not only saves time but also adds value for clients seeking high-impact finishes.

Additionally, the press is much easier to operate. It comes equipped with Insta.Color makeready technology, touchscreen controls, and automated assistance features. “We expected a tough learning curve,” Curtis admitted, “but our team picked it up quickly. It’s faster and more intuitive than our old machine.” Blackwell agreed, noting, “Our operator loves the new console. It’s full of features but surprisingly user-friendly.”

A Stronger Future for Campus Printing

Chris Manley, President of Graphco, applauded UAB’s decision. “Their team truly understands the importance of reliability, efficiency, and quality,” he said. “We’re proud to support their mission.”

By adopting cutting-edge technology, UAB Printing & Mailing Services continues to lead in campus printing. The RMGT 970 positions them for faster service, higher quality, and a more sustainable operation—benefiting not only the university but the greater Birmingham community as well.
