Nearly five decades after earning national recognition, Birmingham’s Vulcan statue has finally received its official National Register of Historic Places marker.
A Milestone Nearly 50 Years in the Making
The effort to secure the marker began in 1976, when the Alabama Historical Commission approved paperwork to include the Vulcan statue in the National Register. Despite that milestone, the physical marker was never installed — until now.
Renewed Effort Through Local Leadership
Cynthia Cardona, president and CEO of Vulcan Park and Museum, said the museum revived the project last year by applying for a grant to fund the installation. The new marker now stands proudly at the base of the steps leading up to the statue.
Symbol of Civic Pride
“For the local community, it’s going to give them a tremendous amount of pride because the site is so unique and now they can come here and see why,” Cardona said. The addition offers visitors a visible reminder of Vulcan’s place in both Birmingham’s and Alabama’s history.
