A group of shelter animals from Birmingham has been relocated to Virginia as part of an ongoing effort to reduce overcrowding in Alabama shelters.
Transport Mission Led by Pilots To The Rescue
Nonprofit aviation group Pilots To The Rescue flew 15 cats and 12 dogs from Birmingham to Manassas, Virginia on Wednesday. The animals are being transferred to shelters in the Washington, D.C. area and other northern regions where there is greater capacity for intake and adoption.
Easing Pressure on Local Shelters
Alabama shelters continue to face strain from high intake volumes and limited space. The transport initiative helps open up room at local facilities, improving conditions for both remaining and incoming animals. By partnering with shelters that have higher adoption rates, the effort also increases the animals’ chances of finding permanent homes.
National Support for Local Impact
The relocation flight was funded by the BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national organization supporting animal welfare efforts across the U.S. Pilots To The Rescue coordinates with shelters and rescue centers to fly at-risk animals to safe, adoptive environments.
