Billy’s Tavern reopens in Lakeview under new ownership

After a temporary closure earlier this year, Billy’s Tavern in Birmingham’s Lakeview district has reopened under new ownership. The longtime neighborhood bar welcomed guests back on Thursday, July 3, following renovations and a change in leadership.

Local Bartender Takes the Helm

According to online reports, Jesse Thompson, a veteran of Birmingham’s bar scene and former bartender at Lou’s Pub, has taken over operations of the tavern. Thompson, who grew up just blocks from the location, brings years of hospitality experience to the role. He began his career at Blue Monkey Lounge in 2007 and spent over a decade at Lou’s Pub & Package Store before stepping into ownership.

Thompson reportedly worked with the building’s owner to take over the space after the passing of founder Billy English in early 2025. English had operated the dive bar for more than 40 years.

Updates Preserve the Bar’s Character

Located at 2829 6th Ave S, Billy’s Tavern has long been known for its no-frills atmosphere and its signature Coca-Cola Santa mural. While Thompson has made updates—such as restoring areas in disrepair and adding seating and pool tables—he has aimed to retain the original character of the space.

“The building used to be a gas station and is much larger inside than it looks from the street,” Thompson said in an interview with online sources. “I’ve made some changes, but the feel of Billy’s remains the same.”

During the renovation process, Thompson uncovered pieces of the bar’s history, including the original 1982 bill of sale.

A Staple in a Changing Entertainment District

When Billy’s Tavern first opened in 1982, it was one of the only bars in the area. Today, it sits among several nightlife establishments in the thriving Lakeview Entertainment District, including Innisfree, Nana Funks, Moe’s Original BBQ, and SIDEBAR.

Despite the competition, Thompson sees value in keeping Billy’s as a laid-back, welcoming space.

“This isn’t a themed cocktail lounge,” he said. “The goal is to offer a relaxed environment where anyone can come in and feel at home.”

Billy’s Tavern is now open Tuesday through Saturday from 2 p.m. to 12 a.m., and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
