One of Birmingham’s largest hospital networks has reached an agreement in principle with UnitedHealthcare, avoiding a lapse in insurance coverage for thousands of residents.
Access to UAB Care Remains Uninterrupted
Just hours before their contract was set to expire, UAB officials confirmed that they had reached an agreement with UnitedHealthcare. The agreement keeps UAB doctors, hospitals, and clinics, including UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands, and the Callahan Eye Hospital, within the UnitedHealthcare network for its members.
One-Week Extension to Finalize Details
UnitedHealthcare said both sides had agreed to a short extension through August 8 to finalize a multi-year contract. They emphasized the extension allows uninterrupted access to UAB’s services while the long-term deal is completed.
UAB echoed the same, noting the new agreement will protect access to all UAB and affiliated providers across the state. For Birmingham patients, this includes vital services at UAB Saint Vincent’s and clinics throughout the metro area.
Baptist Health Joins in Agreement
Baptist Health, part of the broader UAB network, confirmed they had also reached a tentative agreement with UnitedHealthcare. They said the deal was made with patient well-being as a top priority and appreciated the public’s patience during negotiations.
The upcoming multi-year agreement will help reduce uncertainty and ensure consistent care. Birmingham-area patients can now expect continued access to the doctors and hospitals they rely on, with no insurance disruption.
