GameStop shutters 435 stores nationwide, including multiple Alabama locations

GameStop, one of the nation’s largest video game and technology retailers, has closed 435 stores as of January 2026, including several locations in Alabama.

Alabama Store Closures

Stores affected in Alabama include:

Birmingham – Riverview Parkway

Hartselle – Hartselle Plaza

Mobile – Airport Blvd.

Opelika – Gateway Commons

Troy – Troy Plaza

The chain previously closed other Alabama locations in Birmingham, Montgomery, Leeds, Oxford, and Sylacauga.

National Context

GameStop has now closed stores in 42 states as the company adapts to changing consumer habits, including the rise of digital downloads and increased online sales of games, collectibles, and gaming accessories. The chain operates more than 2,000 locations nationwide, though revenue fell $39.3 million in 2025 compared to 2024.

The closures are part of a broader effort to streamline operations and focus on profitable markets while responding to ongoing shifts in the gaming industry.
