Birmingham named a global top food destination for 2026

Birmingham has been named one of the world’s top food destinations for 2026, earning international recognition for its diverse and influential dining scene.

Why Birmingham made the list

Eater included Birmingham in its roundup of must-visit dining destinations, citing the city’s Southern hospitality and its role as a home base for nationally recognized chefs. Writer Rai Mincey highlighted standout restaurants such as Rob McDaniel’s Bayonet, Michelin-recommended Reve, Jose Medina Camacho’s Adios, and the city’s iconic Saw’s BBQ.

What to eat while visiting

The list also emphasized Birmingham’s deep-rooted food traditions, noting that a visit is incomplete without a stop at a classic meat-and-three restaurant like Niki’s West, Eagle’s Restaurant, or Green Acres. These longtime institutions continue to define the city’s culinary identity alongside newer, chef-driven concepts.

Best time to visit and what’s next

Fall was recommended as the ideal time to visit, when college football energizes the city and seasonal dishes take center stage. The annual Southbound Food Festival in September further showcases Birmingham’s evolving food culture. Birmingham joined other notable destinations on the list, including Traverse City, Michigan, Route 66, and international cities such as Milan, Okinawa, and Cape Town.
