Avondale Church purchases former Trinity Medical Center Campus

Redeemer Community Church has officially purchased the long-vacant former Trinity Medical Center property in Birmingham for $15.2 million.

Church acquires entire former hospital campus

The church confirmed it closed on the remaining vacant property on Feb. 25, securing more than 25 acres along Montclair Road. The deal gives Redeemer control of the entire former hospital complex, which includes approximately 1,200 parking spaces and large areas of open land.

According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the purchase price totaled about $15.22 million.

Church leaders originally planned to buy only two buildings and a single parking deck. However, the opportunity expanded during negotiations, allowing the church to acquire the entire site instead.

Leaders said the larger purchase better supports their long-term vision. They hope to create a campus designed for hospitality, fellowship and community outreach.

Property has been vacant since hospital relocation

The former hospital campus has remained largely unused since 2015. That year, Trinity Medical Center moved operations to a new facility operated by Grandview Medical Center.

Since then, several redevelopment efforts have failed to move forward. Developers announced one proposal in 2018, but the project never materialized. Another plan surfaced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic but also stalled.

Redeemer Community Church began pursuing the property in April 2025. Leaders said the location sits about 1.5 miles from the church’s current sanctuary on Fourth Avenue South.

Growing congregation plans expanded campus

Redeemer Community Church currently worships in a 600-seat sanctuary in the Avondale area. The church moved into that building in 2014 when its congregation was much smaller.

Today the church has nearly 2,000 members, far exceeding the capacity of its current space.

Church leaders say the newly acquired campus will require significant renovation before it can be fully used. Still, the property offers enough space to support the church’s future growth and expanded community programs.

They believe the larger campus will help create a welcoming environment for worship, gatherings and outreach in the years ahead.
