Standard Furniture is closing its downtown Birmingham showroom at 2020 Third Avenue North after 114 years of operation. The family-owned store is holding a floor sample sale with discounts up to 70% as it prepares to leave the area.
A century of history in Birmingham
Founded in 1912 by Felix Shevinsky as the Standard Clothing Company, the business transitioned to furniture and appliances in 1957.
The downtown showroom moved to its current location in 1978, featuring a signature neon sign that lit up Third Avenue North. Today, the business is run by Shevinsky’s great-grandson, Jacob Shevin.
Continuing operations elsewhere
Although the downtown location is closing, Standard Furniture operates 12 additional locations in Alabama and Tennessee, including Bessemer, Center Point, Fayette, Gardendale, Hartselle, Leeds, Moulton, Pelham, Pell City, Talladega, Cullman, and Fayetteville, TN.
Customers can still shop for living room, bedroom, dining, office, and outdoor furniture at these locations.

The downtown Birmingham store is offering discounted floor samples through mid-April. Its current hours are 9 a.m.–6 p.m. on Monday, Friday, and Saturday, 1 p.m.–6 p.m. on Sunday, and closed Tuesday through Thursday.
