Pepper Place has a new spot for sandwich lovers and casual diners.
The Mustard Club, taking over the space formerly occupied by BLUEROOT, is now officially open.
The restaurant describes itself as offering “a lunch-focused menu with thoughtful ingredients and a relaxed neighborhood atmosphere,” bringing a fresh dining option to the area.
From BLUEROOT to a Neighborhood Café
BLUEROOT, which opened in 2019, announced in September 2025 that it would close to make way for a new concept.
Known for quick, nutritious meals, the restaurant had operated both a takeout window in Mountain Brook Village and a full-service location in Pepper Place.
The transformation marks a shift toward a more intimate, community-oriented café experience.
The Mustard Club is owned by chef couple Chris and Anna Newsome, who previously ran Ollie Irene, a Mountain Brook gastropub that closed in 2021. The duo brings their culinary expertise and neighborhood focus to this new venture.
A Diverse Menu and a Fresh Approach
The Mustard Club offers a curated menu that balances variety with quality. Patrons can enjoy sandwiches, small plates, salads, coffee, spritzes, wines, and beers.
The owners included a personal note on the menu thanking guests for their support, explaining that the restaurant is starting gradually and will expand its offerings and hours as the team grows and routines are established.
Visit The Mustard Club
The restaurant is located at 2829 2nd Avenue South, Suite 10, Birmingham. Hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Guests are encouraged to visit early and experience the new neighborhood spot before it becomes busy.
