Birmingham has been ranked one of the top cities in the country for first-time homebuyers, according to a new national housing report.
Strong National Standing for Affordable Housing
A recent Zillow ranking evaluated the 50 largest metro areas in the United States to identify the best markets for first-time homebuyers. The study focused on affordability, housing availability, and market competition. Birmingham placed second overall, behind only Jacksonville, Florida.
The ranking measured how much of a household’s income goes toward rent, how many residents fall within typical homebuying age ranges, and how much of the housing inventory is considered affordable. It also reviewed how many affordable listings are available compared to renter demand.
Key Affordability Factors in Birmingham
In Birmingham, households spend about 21% of median income on rent, according to Zillow data. The report also noted that roughly 33% of residents fall into the home-buying-age category. More than half of local home listings, about 56%, fall into the affordable range for buyers.
The market also shows relatively strong availability, with an estimated 6.2 affordable listings for every 100 renters. These conditions place less pressure on entry-level buyers compared to more competitive metro areas.
Birmingham Among Top Housing Markets Nationwide
The 2026 ranking places Birmingham in the top tier of first-time buyer markets across the country. Other cities in the top 10 include San Antonio, Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis, Detroit, Raleigh, Baltimore, and Louisville. Six of the top-ranked metros are located in the Sun Belt region, where housing inventory has generally improved in recent years.
Analysts noted that top-performing markets tend to offer a balance of affordability, available listings, and reduced competition, rather than excelling in only one category. Birmingham’s overall mix of conditions helped secure its high placement in the study.
