City Walk secures new maintenance funding

The Birmingham City Council has approved new funding aimed at maintaining City Walk, a key downtown public space and pedestrian attraction.

New Funding Approved for Downtown City Walk

City leaders approved a $250,000 grant to support ongoing maintenance of City Walk. The funding comes through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and marks the second time the city has received support from the agency for the project.

The grant arrives as officials continue searching for long-term financial solutions. Previous operating support from the Alabama Department of Transportation ended in 2024, leaving a gap in annual maintenance funding.

City Leaders Emphasize Regional Importance

Council members described City Walk as a unique public asset that draws attention from visitors across the country. Officials said guests staying downtown are often surprised by the size and activity of the space, calling it a standout feature of Birmingham’s urban core.

City leaders and partners at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex emphasized the importance of keeping the area well-maintained. They noted that City Walk serves as a major connection between downtown destinations and the broader central business district.

Efforts to Build Long-Term Sustainability

Officials are now working on strategies to create more stable funding for the future. Discussions include forming a “Friends of City Walk” group and partnering with a community foundation to establish a dedicated fund.

Leaders involved in the effort said the goal is to ensure City Walk remains well cared for while supporting its role as a major public space and visitor attraction. They emphasized continued collaboration between city agencies, community partners, and regional stakeholders to sustain the project long-term.
