TV Station WIAT announces layoffs amid industry changes

A Birmingham television news station is preparing for layoffs that will affect more than 10 employees next month.

Layoffs Announced at WIAT CBS 42

WIAT, known locally as CBS 42, notified employees on Monday that layoffs will take effect in June. The station confirmed that more than 10 positions will be eliminated.

Most of the impacted roles sit in newsroom production, which includes behind-the-scenes work rather than on-air reporting. In addition, the station will also reduce some sales positions.

Parent Company Nexstar Faces Industry Pressure

Nexstar Media Group, which owns CBS 42, operates as the largest television station owner in the United States. The company did not provide specific comments about the layoffs. However, it said it continues to adjust its operations to remain competitive in a changing media landscape.

Recently, a federal judge blocked Nexstar’s proposed $6.2 billion merger with Tegna. The decision paused the deal while an antitrust case moves forward. The merger would have expanded Nexstar’s reach to hundreds of stations across the country.

Media Industry Continues to Shift

The layoffs at CBS 42 reflect broader changes in local television news operations. Many stations nationwide continue to adjust staffing and budgets due to shifting advertising revenue and industry consolidation.

As a result, companies like Nexstar are restructuring teams while legal and financial uncertainties continue to affect major broadcast deals.
