Birmingham Zoo has been recognized as Alabama’s 2026 Attraction of the Year by the Alabama Tourism Department.
Statewide Recognition for the Zoo
State tourism officials announced the award during the Alabama Governor’s Conference on Tourism, held on July 13 at the Renaissance Shoals Hotel in Florence. The honor recognizes destinations that make a lasting impact on visitors while promoting tourism across the state.
The Birmingham Zoo welcomed more than 502,000 guests during its 70th anniversary celebration in 2025. It also remains Alabama’s only zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The recognition reflects the zoo’s commitment to wildlife conservation, education, and family-friendly experiences.
New Animals and Visitor Experiences
The zoo expanded its animal collection in 2025 by welcoming 85 new animals. One of the biggest additions was the opening of Wojciechowski Cougar Crossing. The habitat became home to two rescued cougar cubs and two orphaned bobcats, giving visitors a chance to learn about native wildlife.
Zoo officials continued building on that momentum in 2026 by introducing new animal experiences. The recently launched Dino Safari attraction has become a popular feature for guests of all ages. Visitors can also look forward to the opening of a new axolotl habitat on July 22.
A Milestone for Birmingham Tourism
The award highlights the Birmingham Zoo’s role as one of Alabama’s leading family attractions. Beyond welcoming visitors, the zoo supports wildlife conservation, educational programs, and community engagement throughout the year.
With record attendance, new exhibits, and continued investment in guest experiences, the Birmingham Zoo continues to strengthen Birmingham’s reputation as a top destination for residents and travelers alike.
