Families in the Birmingham area will have an opportunity to apply for U.S. passports during a special passport fair hosted by the U.S. Postal Service this month.
Passport Fair Details
The Birmingham Main Post Office will hold a Passport Fair on Saturday, July 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will take place at 351 24th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203. No appointment is required, making it easier for parents to apply while children are out of school for the summer.
The event welcomes both first-time applicants and families preparing for future travel. Postal Service staff will be available to process passport applications throughout the day.
What Families Need to Bring
Children under the age of 16 must appear in person with both parents when applying for a passport. If one parent cannot attend, the application must include a notarized parental consent form along with a photocopy of the absent parent’s identification.
Applicants must also provide proof of U.S. citizenship and proof of identity. Accepted citizenship documents include a certified birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a previous U.S. passport. Valid identification may include a driver’s license, military ID, government employee ID, naturalization certificate with a photo, or a current passport. Photocopies should include both sides of any double-sided documents.
Applicants must also submit a recent color passport photo measuring 2 by 2 inches. The Birmingham Main Post Office can take passport photos during the event for a $15 fee.
Fees and Additional Information
The passport fee for children under 16 is $100, plus a $35 execution fee. Adult applicants pay $130 for a passport book, along with the same $35 execution fee. Applicants should prepare separate payments according to U.S. Department of State guidelines.
Families who need their passports sooner can request expedited processing for an additional $60 per application. Expedited passport delivery within the United States is also available for $22.05.
To save time at the event, applicants can complete their passport application before arriving. However, they should wait to sign the form until instructed by a passport acceptance agent. Residents who cannot attend the fair can also visit other participating Post Office locations that offer passport services.
