University Tacos is preparing to close its downtown Birmingham location, but customers can still visit the restaurant’s original
University Boulevard location.
Downtown University Tacos Location Set to Close
The University Tacos location at 2015 5th Ave. N. will serve customers for the final time on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The downtown restaurant opened in 2024 in the former Miami Fusion Café space. Its colorful interior also featured a mural by Birmingham artist Dewon Moton.
The closure comes about two years after the downtown location opened. However, the restaurant’s original location will remain open.
University Tacos Has Served Birmingham Since 2014
University Tacos first opened in Birmingham in 2014. The restaurant built a local following with Mexican-inspired favorites such as street tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tostadas.
Its original restaurant is located at 2009 University Blvd., near the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus. The location previously expanded into the neighboring former Lucy’s Coffee & Tea space, creating additional seating.
For UAB students, employees, and nearby residents, the University Boulevard restaurant will continue to provide a place to grab a meal.
Where to Find University Tacos After the Closure
While the downtown location is closing, Birmingham customers can still visit University Tacos at its original University Boulevard location.
The remaining location is at 2009 University Blvd., Birmingham, AL.
The downtown restaurant’s final day is Friday, August 28, 2026, giving customers a limited opportunity to visit the 5th Avenue location before it closes.
