Four highly ranked Birmingham-area high school volleyball teams are trading the gym for an outdoor court at Wald Park in Vestavia Hills this Saturday.
Four Top Teams Set for Outdoor Volleyball
Vestavia Hills, Thompson, Spain Park, and Mountain Brook will compete at Wald Park in a unique high school volleyball event. The matches will take place on a portable court set up on the baseball field.
The event will feature all three levels from each program. Ninth-grade, junior varsity, and varsity teams will take part throughout the afternoon.
Mountain Brook will face Spain Park at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. Meanwhile, Vestavia Hills will play Thompson at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.
Birmingham Volleyball Rankings Add to the Matchup
The event also brings together several of the area’s highest-ranked programs. Thompson enters as the No. 1 team in Class 6A.
Vestavia Hills is ranked No. 5 in Class 6A. Spain Park follows at No. 6, while Mountain Brook is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A.
Because of the quality of the teams involved, the event offers Birmingham-area volleyball fans a chance to see several strong programs compete in an unusual setting.
Wald Park Event Includes Weather Backup
The outdoor court will be positioned in the outfield near the baseball field’s fence. Tents and fans will be available for players, while team trainers will also be on site.
However, summer weather could create a challenge. The afternoon matches will begin during the warmest part of the day, so organizers are preparing for the possibility of rain or excessive heat.
A nearby high school gym will serve as a backup location if weather forces the matches indoors.
Outdoor volleyball events have been held in other parts of the country. However, organizers believe this could be the first high school outdoor volleyball match in Alabama, where summer temperatures can make outdoor competition difficult.
The event begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wald Park in Vestavia Hills, giving local volleyball fans a different way to watch some of the Birmingham area’s top teams.
