Actor Josh Hutcherson, known for playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games films, is helping spotlight pet adoption efforts in Birmingham this August.
Josh Hutcherson Supports Birmingham Pet Adoption
Hutcherson is partnering with Hill’s Pet Nutrition and NBCUniversal Local for the annual Clear the Shelters campaign. The initiative is also being promoted locally by the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
The actor has personal experience with rescue pets. He has adopted two pit bulls, Driver and Manchi, and has spoken about the impact they have had on his life.
Through the campaign, Hutcherson is encouraging people to consider several ways to help shelter animals. Those options include adoption, fostering, and donations.
Clear the Shelters Campaign Runs Through August
The 2026 Clear the Shelters campaign began August 1 and continues through August 31. The effort aims to connect shelter animals with families while supporting organizations that care for pets in need.
Last year’s campaign resulted in 160,000 pet adoptions nationwide. It also raised more than $628,000 for participating animal shelters.
The campaign comes as shelters continue to deal with capacity challenges. Shelter Animals Count reported that the U.S. shelter population grew by 147,000 animals by the end of 2025.
Large dogs are facing particular challenges. According to Hill’s 2026 State of Shelter Pet Adoption report, they spend about 70% more time in shelters than small dogs.
How Birmingham Residents Can Help
Birmingham-area residents can support the effort by adopting a shelter pet or opening their homes temporarily through fostering. Donations can also help local organizations provide food, medical care, and other necessities.
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is participating in the campaign and offers local opportunities for residents who want to support animals in need.
