Sidewalk Cinema unveils new marquee in Downtown Birmingham

Birmingham’s downtown theater district is getting a new landmark as Sidewalk Cinema prepares to expand its presence at the Pizitz Building.

New Sidewalk Cinema Marquee Goes Up

A new illuminated Sidewalk Cinema marquee was installed Monday on the Pizitz Building along Second Avenue North. The sign marks an important step in the nonprofit cinema’s plans to expand its downtown operations.

Sidewalk currently operates a two-screen cinema on the lower level of the Pizitz. However, the organization plans to expand the facility to four screens.

The new marquee is also designed to make the cinema easier to spot in Birmingham’s historic theater district. It joins other well-known theater signs nearby, including those for the Alabama Theatre, Lyric Theatre, and IMAX Dome Theater at the McWane Science Center.

$2.8 Million Expansion Campaign Underway

Sidewalk is currently raising money through a $2.8 million capital campaign. The project would allow the cinema to double its number of screens.

About half of the campaign’s funding has already been pledged. Organizers hope to raise the remaining amount and complete the campaign by the end of 2026.

The expansion would give Sidewalk more space to showcase independent films throughout the year. It would also strengthen the organization’s presence in Birmingham’s downtown entertainment district.

Sidewalk Film Festival Returns to Birmingham

The marquee installation comes just before the 28th annual Sidewalk Film Festival. This year’s festival is scheduled for August 24 through August 30 at venues throughout downtown Birmingham.

A special lighting celebration for the new sign is planned for August 29. The event will coincide with the festival’s Opening Night festivities.

Sidewalk leaders say the new sign represents more than the cinema’s expansion plans. It also reflects the organization’s ability to continue operating through major challenges, including the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the planned expansion and new marquee, Sidewalk is looking toward a larger future in Birmingham’s theater district.
