14 restaurants close as Birmingham dining group navigates tough decisions

A major Birmingham-based restaurant group is undergoing widespread closures and financial strain, affecting dining locations across Alabama and nearby states.

Widespread Closures Across Multiple Brands

At least 14 restaurants connected to the Pihakis Restaurant Group have closed within a short period, according to company updates. The closures span Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia and include both temporary and permanent shutdowns.

The company has acknowledged that some temporary closures may become permanent as it evaluates operations. Leadership has brought in outside consulting support to guide restructuring efforts. Officials stated the goal is to strengthen long-term operations, even if difficult decisions are required in the short term.

Affected locations include multiple brands under the group’s umbrella, such as Hero Diner, Little Donkey, Luca, Rodney Scott BBQ, and Psito. Valley Post, a newer development in the Birmingham area, also saw several of its associated restaurants impacted.

Financial Disputes and Legal Pressure

The restaurant group is also facing financial disputes involving unpaid balances and rent claims. A Birmingham-based supplier filed a lawsuit seeking more than $394,000 in unpaid bills tied to multiple restaurant locations across several states.

In addition, a real estate investor who leases properties to the group filed liens totaling more than $340,000. The filings allege missed rent payments across several restaurant sites and include claims on equipment and furnishings.

These legal and financial actions add pressure as the company continues reviewing its portfolio of restaurants and considering future changes.

Industry Figure Behind the Expansion Faces Challenges

Nick Pihakis, a well-known figure in Birmingham’s restaurant scene and co-founder of Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, built a large hospitality network over several decades. His work helped shape Birmingham’s modern food culture and contributed to the growth of several regional restaurant brands.

The Pihakis Restaurant Group expanded across the Southeast with concepts including barbecue, Mexican cuisine, Greek food, and diner-style restaurants. Its 2025 development, Valley Post, introduced a multi-restaurant destination with shared dining and outdoor spaces in the Birmingham metro area.

Company leadership has stated that it continues to evaluate operations and may pause additional locations as part of its restructuring process. Officials emphasized that any decisions are being made with attention to employees, customers, and local communities.

At this stage, the company says it is working toward a long-term plan, while uncertainty remains around which locations may reopen, remain paused, or close permanently.
