28 Birmingham students honored for engineering and innovation

A group of Birmingham high school students pursuing engineering and innovation recently received recognition from a historic women’s organization for their academic involvement in STEM programs.

Students Honored for Engineering and STEM Participation

The Birmingham Chapter of The Links Incorporated honored 28 students from Carver High School, Ramsay High School, and Parker High School. The recognition took place during the National Society of Black Engineers Junior Honors and Awards Day.

Each student participated in NSBE Jr. chapters at their respective schools. The program connects young students with engineering-focused learning and mentorship opportunities. Organizers said the initiative helps build early interest in STEM careers and academic pathways.

Longstanding Support for Youth Development

The Birmingham chapter of The Links Incorporated has supported local engineering programs for the past 10 years. Its efforts focus on expanding STEM education and providing mentorship for students interested in technical fields.

Members of the organization said representation plays an important role in student development. Andrea Montgomery, a mechanical engineer and Links member, said the program builds community and connection by showing students professionals who share similar backgrounds. She added that consistent school involvement helps students see long-term opportunities in engineering.

Student Experiences Highlight Program Impact

Program leaders highlighted student achievements during the ceremony. One example included Carver High School senior Camille Maiden, who participated in an educational trip to Ghana through support from the NSBE Jr. program.

Maiden described the experience as life-changing and said it helped build confidence for future college plans. She added that traveling far from home prepared her for the independence required in higher education.

The Birmingham Chapter of The Links Incorporated is also marking its 70th anniversary, continuing its focus on service, education, and community support.
