A major renovation of a Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Homewood highlights a broader surge in high-value construction projects across Alabama.
The $5.3 million permit, issued on March 24, covers a redevelopment aimed at modernizing the store and improving access and safety for the surrounding community.
Renovation Plans and Community Impact
The project will expand and upgrade the existing grocery store while adding more parking space and improving traffic flow around the site.
Plans also include a safer pedestrian route for children who use a nearby tunnel, along with new green space to enhance the surrounding area.
Bradford Building Co. will carry out the redevelopment. The project reflects ongoing investment in one of Birmingham’s older suburban communities, where infrastructure updates continue to support local residents and businesses. Completion is expected by the end of 2026.
Part of a Larger Statewide Trend
The Piggly Wiggly permit is one of 15 building projects across Alabama valued at over $1 million each. These projects span multiple cities, including Auburn, Cullman, Gadsden, Huntsville, and areas within the Birmingham metro.
Other notable permits include a commercial development in Gadsden valued at $3.7 million and a research facility in Pelham valued at $3.5 million. Together, these projects point to steady construction activity across the state.
Signs of Continued Growth
The volume of high-dollar permits suggests sustained economic development and infrastructure investment throughout Alabama.
Developers and construction firms continue to invest in retail, commercial, and research facilities, reflecting demand for modern spaces and improved services.
The Piggly Wiggly redevelopment stands out as a key example of reinvestment in established neighborhoods, combining retail upgrades with community-focused improvements.
