The Birmingham City Council has approved a $615 million operating budget for Fiscal Year 2027, outlining investments in neighborhood improvements, public safety, youth programs, public transportation, homelessness services, and city employees.
Neighborhood projects receive major funding
The FY2027 budget dedicates more than $19 million to neighborhood revitalization efforts across Birmingham. Planned investments include $12 million for street resurfacing, $3 million for weed abatement, $1.5 million for demolition and blight removal, and more than $1.5 million for critical home repairs. The city also allocated funding for traffic calming, recycling initiatives, and façade improvement projects.
Officials said these investments build on additional infrastructure funding approved earlier this year through the city’s surplus spending plan.
Budget prioritizes youth, public safety, and transit
Several education and youth initiatives will continue under the new budget. Funding includes support for Birmingham Promise, mental health services and financial literacy programs in Birmingham City Schools, youth sports, conflict resolution programs, and workforce initiatives.
Public safety remains another priority, with increased funding for Community Violence Intervention programs and youth re-entry services. The budget also continues significant investments in public transportation, including funding for the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority, the Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit system, Birmingham On Demand microtransit, and ClasTran.
Employee pay and homelessness services also expand
The FY2027 budget increases support for homelessness services, with additional funding aimed at housing stability and assistance programs for unhoused residents.
City employees will also receive new investments through salary adjustments, healthcare funding, and a one-time premium payment for eligible full-time employees. Officials said the budget reflects the city’s continued focus on maintaining financial stability while expanding services that benefit residents across Birmingham.
