The City of Birmingham is accepting applications for its 2027-28 Building Opportunities for Lasting Development (BOLD) program, which supports projects that strengthen the local economy and improve neighborhoods.
Up to $1.5 Million Available
City leaders have allocated up to $1.5 million for the upcoming funding cycle as part of Birmingham’s fiscal year 2027 budget. Since launching in 2018, the BOLD program has awarded approximately $6.2 million to 66 organizations working to expand economic opportunities throughout the city.
Mayor Randall Woodfin said the program continues to invest in organizations that create lasting benefits for Birmingham residents. The initiative aims to support projects that encourage economic growth, revitalize neighborhoods, and improve quality of life across the community.
Focus Areas for Funding
The city will evaluate proposals in five priority areas: small business development, workforce development, removing barriers to economic opportunity, creative placemaking, and high-growth industries.
According to the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, the program encourages projects that improve economic mobility, strengthen local businesses, and create long-term community impact. Officials will also consider each proposal’s strategy for growth and its potential to benefit Birmingham residents.
How Organizations Can Apply
Eligible businesses and nonprofit organizations can submit proposals through the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity. Applicants may also participate in technical assistance workshops and office hours to receive guidance before completing their applications.
A review committee that includes representatives from the mayor’s office and Birmingham City Council administration will evaluate submissions. The application deadline is August 13, giving interested organizations several weeks to prepare their proposals.
