Birmingham has earned national recognition as one of the country’s strongest sports business markets, according to a new industry ranking.
Strong National Standing in Sports Business Rankings
The Sports Business Journal ranked Birmingham as the 38th best sports business city in the United States. The report highlighted the city’s strong college sports presence, including its connection to the Southeastern Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. It also pointed to major venues such as Protective Stadium and events like the Birmingham Bowl.
The ranking placed Birmingham ahead of several larger metro areas without major professional sports franchises, including Portland, New Orleans, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City.
Growth in Sports Events and Infrastructure
City and tourism leaders credited Birmingham’s rise to continued investment in sports infrastructure and event hosting. The city has hosted NCAA championships across multiple sports, including basketball, track and field, and cross-country events.
Officials also noted the role of partnerships with local organizations and marketing firms that help bring major tournaments and sporting events to the region. These efforts have positioned Birmingham as a consistent host for youth, collegiate, and amateur athletics.
Recognition for a Growing Sports Economy
Industry leaders said Birmingham’s sports ecosystem continues to expand through collaboration between public and private partners. The city moved up from 42nd place in a previous ranking, reflecting steady growth in recent years.
The top of the national list included major metropolitan hubs such as Atlanta, New York City, Indianapolis, Charlotte, and Minneapolis–St. Paul. Among cities without major professional sports franchises, Birmingham ranked third overall.
Officials said continued investment in venues, events, and partnerships will help sustain Birmingham’s momentum as a sports destination.
