A long-vacant steel site in Gadsden is set for new life, city officials announced Friday. Minth Group Limited plans to invest $430 million to build its largest manufacturing campus, creating more than 1,400 jobs.
Reviving a historic site
The facility will occupy a 400-acre brownfield site that once housed Republic Steel and Gulf States Steel. The location had employed thousands before closing two decades ago.
Mayor Craig Ford called the redevelopment “a new chapter” for the city and praised the persistence of residents who stayed despite prior closures.
Facility details and industry impact
Minth’s new campus will produce plastic and aluminum components for automakers in the U.S., including Hyundai in Montgomery and Kia in West Point, Georgia.
The company says this will be its largest manufacturing facility to date, bringing modern industrial investment to Alabama.
Support and economic significance
Local, state, and federal leaders—including President Donald Trump and Sen. Katie Britt—helped create the conditions for the investment. Representatives from Hyundai, Honda, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes, Mazda, and Volkswagen attended the announcement. Mayor Ford called the project “a major step forward for our workforce and local economy.”
