Petition to honor Ozzy Osbourne brings UK visitor to Birmingham

A visitor from Birmingham, England, traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, to rally support for a campaign to rename Birmingham Airport in the United Kingdom after legendary musician Ozzy Osbourne.

Campaign Brings Two Birminghams Together

Dan Hudson appeared before the Birmingham City Council during a recent meeting to explain his proposal. While visiting the United States for a wedding in Atlanta, he made a stop in Birmingham, Alabama, because he believed the city would appreciate

Ozzy Osbourne’s influence on music history.

Hudson launched the campaign following Osbourne’s death. He argues that the Black Sabbath frontman deserves to have Birmingham Airport renamed in his honor because of his lasting impact on heavy metal music and his hometown in England.

Petition Continues to Gain Support

The campaign has attracted widespread attention. Hudson said his Change.org petition has collected nearly 80,000 signatures. He also noted that members of the Osbourne family, including Jack and Kelly Osbourne, have expressed support for the effort. Several musicians have also backed the proposal.

Despite the growing support, airport officials in the United Kingdom have not approved the idea. According to Hudson, they believe the airport’s current name plays an important role in its international identity and future development.

Hudson disagrees with that position. He points to several major U.S. airports named after notable public figures as examples that recognition and branding can successfully coexist.

Birmingham City Council Receives the Request

Hudson said Birmingham, Alabama, seemed like the right place to seek support because of its own rich musical heritage. He hopes both cities can celebrate their cultural connections and recognize artists who helped shape modern music.

After his presentation, Hudson said Birmingham City Council members indicated they would forward his request to officials at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. While the Alabama airport has no authority over its counterpart in England, Hudson believes the symbolic support could strengthen his campaign.

For now, he says he plans to continue collecting signatures and advocating for the airport renaming until officials in the United Kingdom reconsider the proposal.
