City leaders unveil Birmingham Children and Youth Commission initiative

Birmingham city leaders have created a new commission aimed at improving outcomes and expanding opportunities for young people across the city.

New City and Schools Partnership

Mayor Randall Woodfin and Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan announced the formation of the Birmingham Children and Youth Commission. The initiative brings together leaders from city government, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations.

Officials said the goal is to strengthen collaboration and build a more coordinated approach to supporting children. The commission includes representatives from groups such as the Hispanic and Immigrant Coalition of Alabama and Birmingham Promise. Members will meet in a series of sessions to guide their work.

Focus on Data and System Gaps

The commission will review data related to youth services and educational outcomes. It will also identify gaps in current systems and highlight areas for improvement.

City leaders said the effort will help align resources more effectively across agencies. The group plans to examine challenges affecting children from early childhood through career readiness.

“Cradle to Career” Roadmap Planned

The commission will produce a public report by July called the “Cradle to Career Roadmap.” The document will outline strategies for how Birmingham can better invest in its youth.

Officials described the roadmap as a long-term blueprint for opportunity. It will focus on building stronger pathways that connect education, workforce development, and community support systems.

City leaders said the initiative aims to ensure more consistent support for children as they move through each stage of life.
