The City of Birmingham is beginning a public engagement process to gather feedback on potential rules for Accessory Dwelling Units, also known as ADUs.
City Opens Discussion on Future Housing Options
City officials are inviting residents to help shape how ADUs could be allowed under local zoning rules. ADUs are small, independent housing units built on the same property as a primary home. These can include backyard cottages, garage apartments, carriage houses, or in-law suites.
Many of these housing types already exist in Birmingham, especially in older neighborhoods. However, current zoning rules do not allow them in all residential areas. The Planning Division is now reviewing whether to create a formal ADU ordinance with clear standards. Officials stressed that no final decisions have been made.
Housing Affordability Drives the Conversation
City leaders say ADUs could help address rising housing costs and expand living options. Supporters note that these units can help older residents age in place, provide more affordable options for younger adults, and allow homeowners to earn additional income.
Because ADUs are built on existing lots, planners also say they can increase housing supply without significantly changing neighborhood character. The city has emphasized that community input will guide the process from the beginning.
Public Town Halls Scheduled Across Birmingham
The city will host multiple town halls to gather feedback and answer questions. East Birmingham residents can attend a session at Social Venture on June 9 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. South Side residents will meet at Avondale Public Library on June 11 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
A central session will take place at the Birmingham Public Library’s Central Branch on June 16 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., with livestream access available. North Birmingham residents can attend a meeting at the North Birmingham Public Library on June 17 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
Virtual sessions via Microsoft Teams are scheduled for June 23, offering both daytime and evening options. A final West Side meeting will be held at the 5 Points West Public Library on June 30 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
City officials encourage residents to attend a session and share their perspectives as part of the ongoing planning process. More information is available at birminghamal.gov/adu.
