Major expansion for Community Food Bank of Central Alabama nears completion

The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is preparing to open a new, expanded headquarters this summer after more than a year of construction work.

New Facility Expands Food Distribution Capacity

The nonprofit is moving into a newly built facility along Lakeshore Drive in Bessemer at 4336 Turin Drive. The organization began construction after acquiring a larger 9.78-acre site in 2024 to address space limitations at its long-time Birmingham location.

The new headquarters includes more than 72,000 square feet of operational space. It adds expanded refrigeration and freezer storage, improved parking, and multiple loading bays to support deliveries and donations.

Long-Running Nonprofit Expands Regional Reach

Founded in 1982, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama has grown from a small volunteer effort into a major regional food distribution network. The organization now works with more than 230 partner agencies across 12 counties in central Alabama, including food pantries, shelters, and youth programs.

Leaders say the expansion will allow the nonprofit to distribute millions of meals more efficiently each year. The move is expected to improve logistics and increase support for families facing food insecurity across the region.

New Headquarters Includes Large-Scale Community Artwork

The exterior of the new facility features a large mural measuring 38 feet by 422 feet. Local artists designed the artwork to reflect the organization’s mission and community impact.

Construction is nearing completion, and the organization plans to begin moving into the new building at the end of June. Volunteer operations are expected to start by the end of July, marking a full transition to the expanded site.
