Birmingham City Schools is providing free summer lunches for children and teens across the district as part of its Summer Feeding Program aimed at supporting families during the school break.
Free Meals Available Starting June 15
Beginning June 15, free dine-in meals will be available for all children ages 18 and under at participating Birmingham City Schools campuses and select Housing Authority of the Birmingham District locations. The program is designed to ensure students continue to receive nutritious meals while school is not in session.
At school campuses, lunch service will run from June 15 through July 9 and will be offered Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. These locations will be closed on Fridays, except for Martha Gaskins Elementary School, which will provide meals on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help fill the gap.
Housing Authority Sites Extend Meal Access
Housing Authority locations will also participate in the program from June 15 through July 24, offering meals Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Participating sites include Cooper Green, Collegeville, Elyton Village, Harris Homes, Kimbrough Homes, Marks Village, North Birmingham Homes, Roosevelt/Benjamin Green, Smithfield Court, Tom Brown Village, Todd Homes, and Tuxedo Terrace. These locations provide additional access points for families across multiple Birmingham neighborhoods.
Supporting Families During Summer Break
School officials say the program helps ensure that no child goes hungry during the summer months when school meals are not available. Meals will be served in safe, supervised, dine-in environments at each participating site.
District staff emphasize that the program is part of a broader effort to support student well-being beyond the classroom and to provide consistent access to healthy food options throughout the break.
